Grazie ai progressi nel campo delle neuroscienze, della genetica e dell’antropologia, è oggi possibile tracciare una storia naturale della mente, cogliere somiglianze e differenze tra esseri umani e animali, ripercorrere le tappe evolutive attraverso cui è passato il sistema nervoso. Siamo anche sempre più in grado di descrivere le complesse reti neurali che fanno sì che possiamo prevedere, organizzare e seguire lo svolgersi delle nostre azioni, attraverso un continuo intreccio tra fattori cognitivi ed emotivi. Una geografia della mente che ci rivela come sono scaturiti comportamenti sempre più complessi, dai movimenti al linguaggio sino alle scelte morali, e ci dischiude un mondo nuovo, diverso da come l’avevamo finora immaginato, in cui non è necessaria la presenza di un deus ex machina che faccia da interprete e tiri i fili del teatro mentale.

Thanks to the advances in
neuroscience, genetics and anthropology it is today possible to trace
a natural history of mind as well to assess differences and similarities between human and
animal brains. We are more and more able to describe the intricate
neural networks that allow us to preview, organize and follow our
actions through a continuous dialogue between cognitive and emotional
factors. This neuroscientific approach sheds light on the evolution
of complex behaviors, from movements to
language and moral choices. Step by step, the human mind appears
under a different perspective as the neurosciences disclose a world
in which there is probably no need for a central agent or Deus ex machina
who pulls the strings of mental theatre.
